Donald Trump suspended all military aid after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last week, White House officials said Monday.
“The president is clear that he is also focused on peace. We need to be committed to that goal, too. We are suspending and reviewing our aid to ensure it contributes to the solution,” the official said on condition of anonymity.
Zelenskiy’s office did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment outside office hours.
The move comes after Trump took office in January with a more reconciliational position on U.S. policies to Ukraine and Russia.
On Monday, Trump once again said that Zelenskiy should be even more appreciating American support after he responded to earlier angrily at the Associated Press report that the war ended “very, very far away.”
“This is the worst statement Zelenskyy could make, and the United States will not endure it for longer!” Trump wrote in “Social of Truth” with the alternative spelling of the Ukrainian leader’s name.
But Trump also suggested on Monday that despite a proposal for a ceasefire in the war with neighboring countries, a deal to invest in Ukrainian minerals could still be agreed.
The Trump administration believes minerals are the tens of thousands of dollars of minerals that the United States has won Ukraine’s financial and military aid since its invasion three years ago.
When asked Monday whether the deal was dead, Trump said at the White House: “No, I don’t think so.”
Trump described it as a “big deal for us” and said he will make an update on the situation Tuesday night at a joint Congress meeting.
