Walmart’s Sam’s Club tests a future without checkout lines | Real Time Headlines

Sam’s Club is opening a store in the Dallas area and asking customers to go all digital. Shoppers will use smartphone apps to scan and pay for their purchases instead of standing at a checkout counter.

Nicholas said that when it reopens, the store will be a testing ground for Sam’s Club’s latest features and emerging technologies.

“The idea is that over time we as a business will get to 100% digital engagement and have to prove things work before we can scale,” he said.

He added that he wanted “to feel like what shopping will feel like in the future.”

Compete with Costco

Peter Keith, senior research analyst at Piper Sandler, said Costco has long been the “king of warehouse club channels.” But he said Sam’s Club has added features to “upgrade the shopping experience,” such as introducing a permanent station in some clubs where chefs make sushi rolls in front of customers.

Notably, Sam’s Club differentiates itself by embracing e-commerce offerings and attracting customers looking for easier and faster ways to shop, such as Scan & Go.

“It really takes away the most painful part of these membership clubs, which is the long checkout lines,” he said.

Sam’s Club and Costco have about the same number of clubs in the U.S., but Costco’s annual revenue is about twice as much. Sam’s Club net sales totaled $86.2 billion in its most recent fiscal year, while Costco’s U.S. stores had net sales of $176.63 billion.

She has never used Scan & Go and said she hopes the new technology doesn’t come at the expense of customer service.

“Sometimes it can be a little risky if you scan incorrectly or need help,” she said. “Hopefully they have enough staff on hand.”

As construction crews at Grapevine’s Sam’s Club completed construction, the retailer posted signs at nearby Sam’s Club gas stations and car washes to educate customers on how to prepare for the club’s return and encourage them to download Scan & Go.

When customers walk into the newly reopened club, staff will be ready to help them download the app or follow them through their purchase if they need help learning how to use the app.

Nicholas said there will be no change in the number of Grapevine store employees, but some will take on new roles.
