Vinyl Pressure Issues – Toxic Chemicals and High Carbon Footprint | Real Time Headlines

Vinyl records are probably the most enduring format for music. 12-inch vinyl LP is a format that has been around for nearly 80 years, but its popularity has been steadily rising over the past two decades.

According to a report from the research and market, 30 million vinyl records were sold in the US and the UK alone in 2024, and the global vinyl market is expected to be worth $1.5 billion by 2030.

“It continues to grow,” said Barry Hurley, managing director of Packaging Voice, a vinyl pressure plant outside London.

Hurley told CNBC’s CNBC, “The format itself hasn’t changed much, except for the addition of many different colors and special effects vinyls that we specialize in.” convergence.

Unfortunately, music lovers love that its rich sound quality records are made of non-renewable materials and have a high carbon footprint.

“PVC is one of the materials currently used in pressure vinyl LP and 7-inch materials. It has a very toxic material during the manufacturing process.”

Carey’s company is the developer of Evovinyl, a plant-based material.

“We extract waste from sugar cane, process it into polymers and mix it with organic fillers. It’s not fossil fuel-based and has a much lower carbon footprint,” explains Carey.

His team is now about to create 100% organic solutions, with the current product being about 98% there.

Barry Hurley’s plants have been testing environmentally friendly solutions, including detection and shrink wrap alternatives. He said these efforts mean that during the pressing process, evolutionary music consumes 15% less energy.

“No industry is out of trouble, and vinyl urgency should not be expected,” Hurley said.

The product has gained interest from the main tags.

“We recently did a Coldplay project. We did a Camila Cabello project. So, more proof of concept projects until we were 100% confident.”

The next challenge for the business will expand.
