Brian Thompson, CEO UnitedHealth GroupA person familiar with the matter told CNBC that the company’s insurance unit was shot and killed in downtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning.
UnitedHealth Group pulled out its investors the day after reports of the shooting broke. Thompson leads UnitedHealthcare, the largest private health insurer in the United States
Police are investigating the shooting as a targeted attack, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The person described the suspect as a white male wearing a black hoodie, black pants, black sneakers with white trim and a gray backpack. The suspect also used a firearm with a silencer, the person added.

A spokesman for the New York Police Department confirmed that a 50-year-old man was shot and killed in downtown Manhattan at 6:46 a.m. ET on Wednesday. The spokesman did not confirm the man’s identity.
The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead, the spokesperson said. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing, they added.
UnitedHealth Group held an investor day event at the Hilton Hotel in downtown New York City. UnitedHealth Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The company did not confirm the shooting during its investor day.
“I’m afraid that as some of you may be aware, one of our team members is dealing with a very serious medical condition,” UnitedHealth staff said during the investor day, according to a transcript. “As such, I’m afraid we This event must end today, I am sure you will understand.”
