Britain abandoned the investigation in a partnership with Chatgpt Maker Openai on Wednesday, saying the software giant’s level of control over the AI company is not guaranteed.
The partnership underwent antitrust reviews in the UK and the US after the startup’s board battle resulted in the exit and return of CEO Sam Altman.
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said that although Microsoft did have a material impact on OpenAI in 2019, it has not gained de facto control since then, so it is not eligible for review under the UK’s merger control regime.
A Microsoft spokesman said the partnership with Openai and its ongoing development “promotes competitive, innovative and responsible AI development.”
“We welcome the CMA’s conclusions, with careful and careful consideration of business reality to end the investigation,” the spokesperson said.
