The Republican presidential candidate’s legal team said in a letter that delaying Trump’s sentencing until after the election would “reduce, if not eliminate, questions about the integrity of any future proceedings.” nbc news.
They also claimed that New York Judge Juan Merchant had no reason to stick with the current sentencing schedule other than the “naked goal of election interference.”
“There is no reason to continue the rush,” attorneys Todd Branch and Emile Bove wrote in a letter Wednesday. “We therefore respectfully request that any sentencing, if necessary, be deferred until after the presidential election.”
Trump is currently scheduled to be sentenced on September 18, about seven weeks before Election Day.
Trump was scheduled to be sentenced on July 11, less than two months after a jury found him guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush-money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.
Merchan postponed sentencing on July 2 because Supreme Court ruling The bill holds that former presidents are entitled to “constructive immunity” from prosecution for all official acts they performed while in office.
A spokesman for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office declined to comment on the latest request from Trump’s legal team.
