President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday named tech billionaire Elon Musk and conservative activist Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency, fulfilling a campaign promise to give Musk sweeping oversight of government spending .
Trump in a statement Post to social mediaIt said the department would help “abolish government bureaucracy” and cut redundant regulations. The agency’s name, shortened to DOGE, is a reference to a popular internet meme cryptocurrency Related to Musk.
Trump said the department would exist “outside the government” and provide advice to White House officials on reforming federal agencies. The arrangement could also allow Musk and Ramaswamy to continue working in the private sector and serve without Senate confirmation.
He gave the department a deadline of July 4, 2026 to complete the work.
