T-MobileThe Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter, that the network was among the hackers involved in a Chinese cyber espionage campaign that breached a number of U.S. and international telecommunications companies. .
The Wall Street Journal added that hackers with ties to Chinese intelligence agencies were able to break into T-Mobile as part of a months-long campaign to monitor cellphone communications of high-value intelligence targets, but did not disclose when the attack occurred.
“T-Mobile is closely monitoring this industry-wide attack,” a company spokesperson told Reuters in an email.
“At this time, T-Mobile systems and data have not been affected in any significant way, and we have no evidence that customer information has been affected.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, it’s unclear what information, if any, was stolen from T-Mobile customers’ call and communication records.
The FBI and U.S. internet watchdog CISA said on Wednesday that hackers linked to China had intercepted surveillance data for use by U.S. law enforcement agencies after breaking into an unspecified number of telecommunications companies.
In early October, the Wall Street Journal reported that Chinese hackers had accessed the networks of U.S. broadband providers, including Verizon Communications, AT&T and Lumen Technologyand obtain information from the system used by the federal government for court-authorized wiretaps.
Beijing has previously denied claims by the U.S. government and others that it uses hackers to break into foreign computer systems.
