letter CEO Sundar Pichai is full of challenges Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella enters artificial intelligence duel.
Well, sort of.
“I’d love to do a side-by-side comparison of Microsoft’s own model and our model anytime, anywhere,” Pichai told interviewer Andrew Ross Sorkin at The New York Times’ Dealbook Summit on Wednesday.
Before Pichai’s remarks, Sorkin read aloud comments Nadella made in an interview earlier this year, in which the Microsoft executive questioned Google’s place in the AI arms race after searching for the giant’s AI products. unfortunate event earlier this year.
“Google should be the default winner in the big tech AI race,” Nadella said in a March note from Norges Bank Investment Management. podcast. “Google is a very capable company, obviously they have the talent and the computing power. They are a vertically integrated player in this. They own everything from data to wafers to models to product and distribution.”
“You are the originals when it comes to artificial intelligence,” Sorkin told Pichai after reading Nadella’s comments. He asked Pichai: “Where do you think you are on this journey relative to other players?”
“They’re using someone else’s model,” Pichai added after saying he was happy to do a side-by-side comparison.
“You’re challenging us,” Sorkin responded.
Pichai laughed, shook his head and added: “I just — I have a lot of respect for them and the team.”
Large language models are a type of artificial intelligence that can be trained on large amounts of data to analyze and generate human language. While Microsoft does have its own AI models, many of the advanced features in its latest products are powered by OpenAI’s LL.M.
Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in late 2022, the market for chatbots and related artificial intelligence tools has exploded, providing consumers with a new way to find information online beyond traditional search. Soon after, Microsoft announced a partnership with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT into the Bing search engine.
Google has used its LL.M.s for years to power its artificial intelligence and search products. Google’s latest LLM is the Gemini series, which powers its conversational artificial intelligence and competes with OpenAI’s GPT model. The company announced more advanced Gemini products for May.
The latest comments come as technology companies are at loggerheads in an escalating arms race over artificial intelligence, particularly between Microsoft and Google.
In October, Microsoft took the unusual step of publicly accuse long term competitor Google A “shadow campaign” was launched across Europe, claiming the efforts were aimed at discrediting the search giant in front of regulators.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Pichai’s remarks.
