Electric vehicle manufacturer BYD The company brought hundreds of Chinese workers on irregular visas to build a factory in Brazil, a leading labor inspector told Reuters on Tuesday, adding that the company had pledged to comply with local rules for workers who remained in the country. Labor laws.
Last month, a total of 163 workers employed by BYD contractor Jinjiang were found to be working in “slave-like conditions”.
Liane Durao, who led the investigation announced in late December, said all of them were leaving or had already left Brazil. In total, BYD has brought about 500 Chinese workers to the country, she added.
BYD and Jinjiang did not immediately respond to requests for comment. BYD had previously said it had severed ties with Jinjiang, which disputed the Brazilian authorities’ accusations.
