D-Texas’ first Rep. Sylvester Turner died Tuesday night after the president suffered a medical emergency Donald Trump’s speech According to Congress, two House Democrats were told of death.
He is 70 years old and has just been sworn in in January. Turner had fought before Bone cancer.
House minority whip Katherine Clarke (D-Mass) during a closed Democratic meeting Wednesday morning, according to a lawmaker attending the meeting.
Another Democrat who saw Turner linking the Capitol with cannon buildings in an underground tunnel said it seemed that Turner had a medical emergency Tuesday afternoon. Members said Capitol police had been notified and helped him.
Several Democratic lawmakers said Wednesday they either saw Turner on the floor of the House or talked to him on the floor of the House before Trump’s joint speech to Congress. Photos and videos from the speech also show Turner sitting in the back of the conference hall.

Turner was elected to Congress in November and served as mayor of Houston from 2016 to 2024. Prior to that, he served as a state legislator for a quarter century.
When D-Texas’ long-time Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee died of pancreatic cancer last July, Congressman Turner announced he would run for her seat and be elected by local Democratic leaders, elected in the November vote since Jackson Lee had already won her primary.
He easily won a seat and was sworn in on January 3.
