Oracle’s The Department of Veterans Affairs confirmed to CNBC that federal electronic health records had a nationwide interruption Tuesday.
The agency said the company’s “all users” of federal EHR, including Virginia, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The agency said six VA medical centers, 26 community clinics and remote VA sites suffered disruptions.
“The affected VA medical facilities follow standard emergency procedures during power outages to ensure continuity of care for veterans,” a VA spokesperson said in a statement Thursday.
Electronic health records or EHR are digital versions of the patient’s medical history updated by doctors and nurses. It is a crucial software in the U.S. healthcare system, and power outages can severely undermine patient care.
Oracle is one of the largest EHR suppliers $28 billion In 20022, it acquired Cerner, a medical record giant.
Virginia said the company’s federal EHR initially started experiencing problems at 8:37 a.m. Tuesday. Users reported that the software was frozen and they could not access the app. The day after Oracle restarted the system, it resumed and cleared the access at 2:05 PM East.
Virginia said Oracle is conducting an investigation to determine what caused the power outage. Oracle did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
