Talk show and media icons Oprah Winfrey Approves vice president on wednesday Kamala Harris for the president.
“All we have to do is elect Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States,” Winfrey said in a speech that drew a strong response from the Democratic National Convention crowd.
Winfrey also made numerous attacks on Republican candidates Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance.
“We have moved beyond ridiculous tweets, lies and stupidity,” Winfrey said at one point.
Elsewhere in her speech, she brought up Vance’s controversial comments slandering “childless cat ladies.”
“When a house is on fire, we don’t ask the homeowner about their race or religion. We don’t want to know who their partner is or how they voted. No, we just try to save them,” she said.
“If the place happens to be owned by a cat lady who doesn’t have children, then we’ll try to get that cat out as well.”
Winfrey’s night of speech boiled down the choice between Harris and Trump to which candidate represents “the best of America.”
Winfrey said, “Soon, we will be telling our daughters and sons” how Harris, the son of immigrants, “grew up to be the 47th president of the United States.” “This is the best of America.”
“Let us choose the sweet promise of tomorrow over the pain of yesterday,” she said. “We’re not going back. We’re not going to be thwarted, pushed down, bullied, kicked back. We’re not going back.”
“But most importantly, let us choose freedom,” she said. “Why? Because that’s America at its best. We’re all Americans, let’s choose Kamala Harris!”
The appearance, which several news outlets reported earlier Wednesday but was kept under wraps by the Democratic National Committee, was notable not just for Winfrey’s star power.
One of Winfrey’s close friends, CBS host Gayle King, said the influential media trailblazer has largely stayed out of political fray throughout her career and has “no intention of getting involved” in Harris’ campaign.
Winfrey’s first endorsement of a political candidate was then-Sen. Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential cycle. One study estimated Winfrey’s approval rating at about this 1 million votes Enter Obama’s column in the Democratic primary.
She also supported former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the President in the 2016 election Joe Biden in the 2020 cycle.
