Memory chip giant SK Hynix said on Friday it plans to invest 9.4 trillion won ($6.8 billion) to build a new semiconductor manufacturing plant in South Korea’s emerging chip center.

The manufacturing plant, or fab, will be built within the Yongin semiconductor cluster south of South Korea’s capital Seoul, where the government is seeking to build a large chip operations complex.

This will be SK Hynix’s first manufacturing plant in the cluster, with construction expected to begin in March next year and completion of the project in May 2027.

South Korea’s SK Hynix is one of the world’s three largest memory chip manufacturers, and its products are widely used in various fields from notebook computers to servers. Recently, the company has had success supplying high-bandwidth memory to Nvidia.

Earlier this year, SK Hynix committed to spending 120 trillion won to build four wafer fabs in the Yongin cluster. The remaining three will be set up later.

This aggressive investment highlights the efforts of SK Hynix and the South Korean government to maintain the country’s leadership in the memory field, which is important for artificial intelligence applications. Seoul has committed Billions of dollars support push into semiconductors —The technology is increasingly seen as strategic by governments.

South Korea is also home to Samsung, the world’s largest memory chip maker.

SK hynix has been riding the wave of artificial intelligence and has partnered with Nvidia to This week’s report Second-quarter profits hit their highest level in six years.
