Vance acknowledged there was a “possible chance” that a rumor he shared about immigrants eating pets could turn out to be false, while police in Springfield, Ohio, faced harsh criticism after they said they had no information to support the conspiracy theory.
“We are deeply concerned that now elected officials in the Republican Party are pushing another conspiracy theory that is simply an attempt to divide people based on lies and, let’s be honest, racist elements,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters this was in response to Vance’s initial claims of eating pets.

In a social media post on Monday, Vance shared a video of him speaking before a Senate committee about the surge of Haitian immigrants living in Springfield, Ohio.
“A few months ago, I raised the issue of illegal Haitian immigration draining social services and causing chaos throughout Springfield, Ohio,” Vance tweeted.
“Reports are now emerging of people’s pets being abducted and eaten by people who should not be in this country,” Vance wrote.
“Where is our border czar?” Vance said, referring to the vice president Kamala Harristhe Democratic presidential candidate.
Vance and other Republicans have attacked Harris, saying she is responsible for illegal immigration into the United States.
His tweet came a day before the Republican presidential nomination Donald Trump is due to debate Harris of Philadelphia.

Vance is scheduled to attend fundraisers in North Carolina and Pennsylvania on Tuesday before taking part in the spin room after the Trump-Harris debate.
