Several key Republican senators want Gaetz report released to Congress Senate They will consider whether to confirm him to the attorney general position if Trump formally nominates him.
The Ethics Commission has been investigating Gaetz for alleged sexual misconduct and potential illegal drug use, among other conduct. The group was due to meet on the report last Friday but postponed the meeting.
Gaetz, who represents Florida’s congressional district, abruptly resigned from the House of Representatives last week after Trump said he would nominate him to be attorney general. His resignation ended the Ethics Commission’s jurisdiction over him.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, Republican of Louisiana. He has said he will “strongly request” the committee not to release a report on Gates, arguing that doing so would be a “serious violation of protocols, traditions and the spirit of the rules.”
If Gaetz is confirmed as attorney general, he will lead the Justice Department, which has previously investigated him for possible trafficking in underage girls. The Justice Department has not filed criminal charges against Gaetz in the case, and he has denied any wrongdoing.
On Thursday, an attorney representing a woman who says she had sex with Gaetz when she was a minor called for the ethics report to be released.
