Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is expected to win a seventh five-year term in Sunday’s election with 87.6 percent of the vote, according to exit polls broadcast on state television.
Lukashenko is a close ally of the Russian president Vladimir PutinHas led the country since 1994.
The electoral commission said the election had a turnout of 81.5%, with 6.9 million people eligible to vote.
