Elon Musk retweeted modified Kamala Harris campaign ad | Real Time Headlines

Elon Musk, the owner of X, retweeted a campaign ad parodying Kamala Harris on Friday without labeling it as misleading, an apparent violation of his own platform’s rules.

Some of the footage in the redacted content — such as footage of Harris addressing the crowd, as well as general footage of her supporters — were used in the latest attack Harris campaign video on YouTube. Most notably, the altered content used a voiceover that sounded like the vice president’s, making it appear that she was calling Biden old and herself an incompetent presidential candidate.

In the original video, Harris narrates the audience, “In this election, each of us faces a question: What kind of country do we want to live in?” before breaking into Beyoncé’s song “Freedom.”

Beyoncé was not included in the altered video that Musk retweeted. Instead, a voice that sounded like Harris began: “I, Kamala Harris, are your Democratic nominee for president because Joe Biden finally exposed his senility in the debate.”

The voice went on to say that Harris was chosen because she was the “ultimate diversity hire” because she is both a woman and a person of color.

“So if you criticize anything I say, you are both sexist and racist,” the voice continued.

The video then accuses Harris of “trying to sound black” and performing a “Barack Obama impression” during her speech.

The video comes as Republicans across the country this week accused Harris of being the “DEI candidate,” with some hints at her race and gender as the reason she was chosen as the Democratic presidential candidate.

In a statement, Harris campaign spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg blasted Musk and former President Donald Trump, saying, “We believe the American people want the real freedom, opportunity, and security Vice President Harris is offering; not the fake, manipulated lies of Elon Musk and Donald Trump.”

It’s unclear whether the video is the product of artificial intelligence. It was originally posted by a YouTube account namedMr. Reagan,” which marks it as parody.

Alexios Mantzarlis, director of the Safety, Trust and Security Program at Cornell Tech, the graduate school of Cornell University in New York City, told NBC News that the changes could be considered deepfakeoften defined as misleading content using artificial intelligence.

“In recent elections in Argentina, India and elsewhere, we’ve seen deepfakes used primarily for this kind of superficial deception, which is more like a parody meme than legitimate misinformation,” Mancharis said. “I expect We’re going to see a lot of this in the United States over the next 100 days,” leading up to the November election.

Musk’s retweet did not have an official label indicating that the video was a parody or manipulation, which may violate X own policy Regarding misleading content.

“You may not share synthetic, manipulated or taken out of context media (‘misleading media’) that could deceive or confuse people and cause harm,” the policy states. “In addition, we may label posts that contain misleading media. To help people understand its authenticity and provide more context.”

This isn’t the first time voice content has changed during this presidential campaign. Earlier this year, a political consultant placed a robocall. Impersonating President Biden Wrongly preventing people from participating in the New Hampshire primary.

Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota accused Musk of violating the company’s own policies.

in a postal On X, she wrote, “If @elonmusk and Restricted image modification content regardless of party affiliation.

X and Elon Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

As of Sunday afternoon, the video Musk had retweeted had 119.9 million views and 166,000 views on Mr. Regan’s YouTube account.

After an assassination attempt on Trump earlier this month, Musk Officially recognized The former president’s campaign.
