“Deadpool and Wolverine” is the 34th film released under the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first film to receive an R-rating from the American Motion Picture Association. The first two “Deadpool” movies were both rated R and were produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox. Disney acquired the company in 2019, bringing the X-Men and Fantastic Four back into the larger Marvel portfolio.
Like previous entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool and Wolverine benefits from fan enthusiasm. To avoid spoilers, viewers are eager to see the film during its opening weekend. Disney kept much of the film secret and held limited press screenings ahead of its premiere.
Powers expects audiences will continue to come back for more in the weeks following the film’s release.
“There’s a lot going on in this movie, there’s a lot of jokes and funny scenes, and no one can take just one, and you know, they’ll come back,” he said.
Ellis Jacob, president and CEO of Cineplex, Canada’s largest movie theater chain, agrees with Ball’s idea. Jacobs said Deadpool and Wolverine is full of Easter eggs and viewers will come back to try to see them all.
He also noted that many moviegoers are purchasing tickets to premium screenings such as IMAX, Dolby and ScreenX, which cost more.
Marvel is also working with movie theaters to license merchandise such as collectible popcorn buckets and drink containers, which theater operators expect will sell out quickly. Concessions have always been theaters’ biggest moneymaker, and having limited-edition merchandise can drive higher food and drink sales.
Of course, Deadpool and Wolverine is also an important release for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sean Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory, said Disney has “taken its foot off the gas” and plans to reduce the number of releases in a franchise that has driven global box office growth for more than a decade. He said Disney is working to turn things around after a series of theatrical missteps, poor box office performance and a deluge of streaming content that has overcrowded the market and overwhelmed even die-hard fans of the Marvel Universe.
“Ultimately, even though this is a Marvel movie, it can also be viewed as a mid-summer action comedy starring characters and brands that die-hard fans and casual audiences alike love,” Robbins said. “Given the fact that Reynolds and Jack Between Mann’s respective influence in pop culture and their friendly exchanges on social media and in interviews, Reynolds and Jackman are a slam-dunk pairing, and there’s also speculation about how the Marvel Universe’s first R-rated movie will play out. It maintains the quality of genuine curiosity that made the first two “Deadpool” movies and (Jackman’s 2017 “Wolverine” movie) “Logan” so popular.
