David Beckham in conversation with CNBC host Tania Bryer at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland ) had a conversation about the “simple values” his parents taught him.
The former football star won the Crystal Award for Philanthropy in his first WEF appearance for his work protecting vulnerable children as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005.
Blair asked Beckham where his passion comes from and the values his parents taught him.
“I think they instilled in me the right values, which are simple values of treating everyone the same and showing respect for people, and I try to do the same with my kids,” Beckham said.
The 49-year-old father of four said his youngest, Harper, is 13 and his eldest, Brooklyn, is 25.
“My boys all know they let a woman walk through the door. When the lady leaves the table, they stand up, shake hands, make eye contact. You know all those values, their joy, their gratitude.
Beckham added: “All my children have expressed joy and gratitude to the two-and-three-year-old. So, the simple values that Victoria and I grew up with, we try to instill in our children.”
He said having children also inspired his work with children around the world. Beckham travels extensively to raise awareness of UNICEF’s work with children. He visited Cambodia to work with victims of violence and abuse, South Africa to meet with families living with HIV and AIDS, and the Philippines, where he met with children affected by Teton Haiyan.
“I’ve taken several kids on different trips. They know exactly what I do for UNICEF. They all want to be involved in the UNICEF work I do. They all want to be involved in different ways and Different charities offer help.
“When I come home from these tours, I continue to show them pictures on pictures, and it just gives them a physical sense of what’s going on in the world, and I think that’s important.”
In his speech at the awards ceremony, Beckham also emphasized that “girls are held back by poverty, violence and discrimination”.
“I want my daughter Harper to have the same opportunities as her brothers, and that goes for all girls everywhere. Being a girl shouldn’t determine what you can do, where you can go and who you can be, ” he said.
