Nearly 85,000 people will receive federal student debt relief through U.S. Department of Education Borrower Defense Loan Discharge Program. People may qualify for this option if their school was closed during their enrollment period, or they were misled by the school or did not receive a quality education.

The Department of Education said it has approved the collective withdrawal of 73,600 students attending schools under the Higher Education Center of Excellence, including Independence University and the University of California, San Diego. The Department of Education said $1.15 billion in debt relief will be awarded to borrowers who attended these institutions between January 1, 2006, and August 1, 2021.
An additional 11,000 borrowers will have their student debt canceled if they attended any of the Drake School of Business locations between January 1, 2008, and July 31, 2015, when the school was closed. The total amount of debt canceled was $107 million.
Finally, 280 borrowers who attended the criminal justice program at the Lincoln Technical College campus in Lowell, Mass., from 2010 to 2012 or the Somerville, Mass., campus from 2010 to 2013 will receive federal student debt discharge. These borrowers will receive a total of $1.4 million in loan forgiveness.
Qualified borrowers enrolled in these institutions will automatically receive aid, even if they do not apply, the department said.
Those who qualify should start receiving emails in the coming days.
Borrowers with disabilities
Another 61,000 federal student loan borrowers have “total and permanentPeople with disabilities will receive $2.5 billion in debt forgiveness, the Education Department said Monday.
This round of relief includes automatic approval of some borrowers for debt relief through data matching with the U.S. Social Security Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs. Other borrowers applied for loan discharge.

Borrowers may be eligible for Total and Permanent Disability, or TPD, Discharge If they suffer from a severe and permanent mental or physical disability that prevents them from working. Proof of disability can come from a doctor, the Social Security Administration, or the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Department of Education also provided loan forgiveness to 6,100 borrowers under the program public service loan forgiveness (PSLF) program totaling $465 million.
The program, signed into law by former President George W. Bush in 2007, allows employees of the government and certain nonprofit entities to have their federal student loans canceled after 10 years of on-time payments.
Biden administration seeks to reverse trend of borrowers being excluded from PSLF technical details. It expands eligibility and allows people to reapply for benefits as long as they work in the public sector and repay their debts.
