Biden delivers foreign policy legacy speech | Real Time Headlines

President Joe Biden was delivering a speech aimed at highlighting the foreign policy achievements of his time in office.

The White House said the Democratic president’s speech at the State Department in Washington was billed as a victory for “the work his administration has done to strengthen America and lead the world.”

One week away from Biden handing over power to his Republican successor, the president-elect Donald Trumpwho relentlessly condemned Biden’s foreign policy record. Trump was particularly critical of Biden’s handling of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

The White House said Biden discussed the Lebanese ceasefire and changes brought about by the fall of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday. Biden also “emphasized an immediate ceasefire in Gaza” and the return of Israeli hostages, according to the White House.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters previewing Biden’s speech that while “we’ve been hit a lot,” the president will declare that “America is winning this competition going forward.”

Later Monday, Biden plans to convene senior officials at the White House to brief on the federal response to ongoing wildfires in the Los Angeles area. Vice President Kamala Harris Also expected to attend the briefing.
