They are among the most in-demand tech jobs in the world – but what is a day in the life of an AI engineer like? CNBC saw firsthand how artificial intelligence is transforming three very different industries.
“Artificial intelligence” and “job creation” are not two terms that are typically thrown together in the same sentence—and for good reason. A report comes from Goldman Sachs 2023 Estimated 300 million Automation may cause full-time jobs to disappear.
However, this is only one side of the story. Artificial intelligence has also created tens of millions of jobs, among which the growth rate of job opportunities requiring artificial intelligence professional skills is 3.5 times that of the overall employment growth rate.
PricewaterhouseCoopers Artificial Intelligence Employment Barometer 2024An analysis of more than 500 million job ads posted since 20161 also found that these jobs can come with a salary premium – on average 25% in the US, 14% in the UK, 11% in Canada and 7% in Singapore.
CNBC met with three Singaporeans who work in artificial intelligence across multiple fields, battling scams and fraud, developing large-scale language models and designing chatbots.
- Rajat Maheshwari is Vice President of the Network and Smart Solutions team MasterCard Targeting the Asia Pacific region. In his role, his team develops tools to manage customer risk and prevent fraud.
- Joel Garcia is ASEAN Technical Director Amazon Internet services. He leads a team that develops artificial intelligence solutions for enterprises.
- Leong Weiqi, who speaks 14 languages fluently, is an artificial intelligence engineer and linguist who participated in the development of SEA-LION (Southeast Asian Language Identical Network), a large-scale language model for Southeast Asian languages.
