Amazon A new Kindle e-reader was released on Wednesday, and for the first time it features a color display.
The retail giant launched the Kindle in 2007, and every device since then has featured a black-and-white screen. The new Kindle’s display is designed to ensure that colors don’t appear washed out or pixelated even when users zoom in on the image.
The company says the $279 device, which Amazon calls Kindle Colorsoft, has “weeks of battery life.” It’s available for pre-order now and will ship on October 30th.
Amazon also launched an updated Kindle Scribe ($399), an updated Kindle Paperwhite ($159), and the 12th-generation Kindle ($109). At a press conference in New York on Tuesday, Amazon device chief Panos Panay called the updates “the biggest ever for the Kindle family.”
Kindle Scribe, Amazon launches in 2022comes with a pen that allows users to take notes, make to-do lists and write directly on the page of the book they are reading. With a new note-taking feature called Active Canvas, users can take notes directly on the e-book page and the text will automatically move to flow around it. They can also take notes in the margins of the book and hide them for later use.
Kindle Scribe also includes another new feature that uses generative artificial intelligence to summarize pages of notes into concise lists. Amazon said the feature uses Bedrock, a software tool that allows users to access large language models from Amazon and other companies such as Anthropic and Stability AI. The device is available for pre-order now and will ship on December 4th.
The new Kindle Paperwhite is faster than the previous model and also has a larger 7-inch display, compared to the 6.8-inch display in the previous version. Amazon says the 12th-generation Kindle is the most “compact” e-reader ever, with a brighter display. Both devices will be available starting Wednesday.
