Canada demanded consultations with the United States on “unreasonable tariffs” at the Canadian World Trade Organization on Wednesday.

“The U.S. decision leaves us with no choice but to respond to protecting Canada’s interests,” Ambassador Nadia Theodore said in a statement posted on LinkedIn. A WTO spokesman confirmed that he had received a Canadian consultation request.

The move could disrupt nearly $2.2 trillion in annual trade after Trump announced that the top three U.S. trading partners failed to stop the flow of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals into the U.S.

“Everyone plays his position. I am playing my position today and representing the Canadian government, demanding consultations with the U.S. government on its unreasonable tariffs on Canada,” Theodore said.

Bilateral consultation is the first phase of formal dispute resolution. If a solution cannot be found within 60 days, Canada can demand a dispute resolution agency ruling based on the Geneva organization.
