President Donald Trump Three White House officials told CNBC Friday that it plans to sign an executive order to make English the official language of the United States.
The order will establish a national language for the first time in American history.
Trump’s order will also revoke former President Bill Clinton’s order Order of August 2000 According to the CNBC shared fact sheet, agencies and other federally funded institutions are required to serve those with limited English proficiency.
Trump’s designation will allow federal agencies to maintain their current policies and continue to provide documents and services in other languages. However, according to the fact sheet, this “encourages new Americans to adopt a national language, opening the door to more opportunities.”
