AMD second quarter 2024 earnings report | Real Time Headlines

AMD shares will fall about 6% in 2024, despite the company being the second-largest supplier of data center GPUs after AMD Nvidia. “As a result, we now expect data center GPU revenue to exceed $4.5 billion in 2024, up from our April guidance of $4 billion,” Su said in a conference call with analysts.

AMD said that driven by the growth in AI GPU shipments, AMD AI chip sales in the company’s data center division increased by 115% year-on-year to $2.8 billion. Analysts polled by StreetAccount expected data center revenue of $2.75 billion.

AMD’s core business is manufacturing central processing units (CPUs) for notebook computers and servers. The company’s customers segment reported PC sales, up 49% year over year to $1.5 billion, compared with StreetAccount’s forecast of $1.43 billion. The growth suggests the PC market is recovering from a slump in the post-pandemic years.

AMD also makes gaming console chips and 3D graphics GPUs, which fall under the company’s gaming category. AMD reported gaming revenue of US$648 million, a year-on-year decrease of 59%. Analysts expected sales of $676 million, according to StreetAccount.

The company’s embedded division, which consists of products acquired through the acquisition of Xilinx for industrial customers in 2022, posted sales of $861 million, down 41% year-over-year, beating Wall Street expectations of $856 million.
