According to President Donald Trump’s busy schedule last week, the FDA plans to rehire about 300 people. Reuters was unable to verify the number.

At least 11 employees working at the FDA Equipment and Radiation Health Center (responsible for Medical Equipment Reviews) have received calls since Friday saying they can return to work on Monday. Some sources have been told that the FDA will continue to return throughout the weekend.
If scientists agree to return, they fired less than a third of their staff about a week ago. The White House told Reuters that the government has fired more than 1,000 FDA employees.
According to Reuters, the FDA fire last week included about 20 people in its office of Neurological and Physical Medical Equipment, some of whom worked on neurofusion. It is unclear whether all the fired workers reviewing Neuralink received a return offer.
Reuters reported in 2023 that the FDA initially rejected Neuralink’s request to start a clinical trial, citing safety risks. The agency has since received initiation approval for clinical trials, which is in progress.
The FDA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The White House declined to comment and forwarded the question to the federal health department that had no response.

At least three employees requested a re-joining FDA to receive a termination letter informing their performance “is insufficient to justify further employment at the institution.” Reuters reported earlier that many of the fired employees had won the model rankings a few weeks ago with no performance issues.
White House Deputy Secretary Anna Kelly had previously told Reuters that Trump had acted quickly to cut wasted spending and non-critical government work.
