President Donald Trump said he could expand U.S. tariffs on imports, including cars, medicines and semiconductors.
In a speech to reporters on Tuesday, Trump said the responsibilities would be about 25%, and “there is much higher in the year.” The president has not stated whether the new tariffs apply to all vehicles entering the U.S. or to all vehicles targeting certain countries, but they say they can start as early as April 2.
However, the threat represents an expansion of the government’s aggressive trade policy, which already includes a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports, which will take effect in March.
The largest exporters of the United States are Mexico, Japan and Canada.
