European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned on Friday that “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine would weaken not only Europe but the United States as the prospects for a Russia-Ukrainian peace agreement are intensified.
von der Leyen said authoritarian countries are closely watching progress in U.S.-led negotiations to end nearly three years of conflict and what concessions can be made to Russia despite its infringement on its neighbors.
“The failed Ukraine will weaken Europe, but it will also weaken the United States,” Von der Leyen told the Munich Security Conference.
“This will exacerbate the challenges in the Indo-Pacific region and threaten our shared interests,” she continued. “That’s why we have to do it right.”
