apple The company announced Wednesday that it is deepening investment in medical research by launching a new, multi-year project called Apple Health Research.
The study will analyze how data from devices such as iPhones, airpods and Apple watches monitor, manage and predict changes in user health. For example, it will explore the connections between different components of health, such as the impact of mental health on heart rate.
Apple Health Research is the company’s first major health research project announced, which unveils Apple Women’s Health Research, Apple Listening Research and Apple Heart and Movess Research 2019. These projects are underway and they have inspired many of the health features Apple has introduced in recent years.

“We are pleased to propose Apple Health Research, which will only accelerate our understanding of human health and technology as a whole, both physically and mentally,” said Dr. Sumbul Desai, vice president of Apple Health, in a statement.
Apple Health Research will be obtained through the company’s research application and participation is voluntary. Users will select each data type they are willing to share with researchers and they can stop sharing at any time or stop participating altogether.
The company said Apple cannot access identifiable information from participants.
Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a teaching branch of a research hospital, are working with Apple to conduct research. The project will last for at least five years and may be expanded beyond the project.
“We’re just beginning to understand how technology improves our understanding of human health,” Dr. Calum Macrae, lead researcher at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Research, said in a statement.
