The United States spent billions of dollars to rebuild and protect the city. However, more may be needed to offset the city’s slow decline into the sea. Most importantly, part of the federal reaction has been criticized for its impact on low-income homeowners. Today, the city is facing a housing crisis as insurance premiums and property taxes rise.
