Vice President JD Vance The United States will safeguard American artificial intelligence and bargaining chips and block efforts to “weaponize” key technologies, it said Tuesday.
Vance said in a speech at the AI Operations Summit in France in Paris: “Some authoritarian regimes have been stolen and use AI to enhance their military intelligence and surveillance capabilities, capture foreign data and create propaganda to undermine national security in other countries. .”
“I think it’s clear that this government will stop this effort and go all out,” Vance added. “We will protect U.S. AI and CHIP technology from theft and abuse, working with our allies and partners to strengthen and Extend these protection and close-range pathways to reach opponents with AI capabilities that threaten all of our people.”
Much of this week’s AI Action Summit focused on DeepSeek, China’s AI model, which claims to be comparable to OpenAI’s O1 inference model at a lower cost. Vance didn’t mention DeepSeek’s name – but Trump’s second command targeted cheap, heavily subsidized technology.
“We are all familiar with cheap technologies on the market, which are heavily subsidized and exported by authoritarian regimes,” he said.
Vance added in a suggestive slide to American allies in the room that working with companies operating under such authoritarian regimes “will never pay off.”
The U.S. vice president added that working with such parties means “linking your country to a dictator who tries to infiltrate, dig and grab your information infrastructure.”
