The company announced over the weekend that “Moana 2” had a domestic box office of $442.8 million and an international box office of $567.1 million. It is the fourth film from Walt Disney’s animation division to gross over $1 billion, joining “Frozen,” “Frozen II” and “Zootopia.”
The feat is another icing on the cake for Disney, which has struggled to gain traction with its animated releases in the years following the pandemic. Much of the company’s difficulties stem in part from the decision to launch a handful of animated features directly on its streaming service, Disney+. This trains parents to find new content at home even after theaters close and movies return to theaters.
“Inside Out 2” not only marked Disney’s return, but also helped drive overall domestic box office growth in June. It grossed over $650 million domestically, becoming the first Warner Brothers’ “Barbie” arrives first billion dollars at the global box office.
It also marks the first time since 2019 that a Pixar or Walt Disney animated film has grossed more than $480 million at the global box office.
Several theatrical releases, including “Deadpool and Wolverine,” “Inside Out” and “Moana 2,” helped Disney’s domestic box office surpass $2.2 billion last year. Accounting for approximately 25% of the total industry transportation volumeaccording to Comscore data.
With “Moana 2” crossing the $1 billion mark, Disney now has a slate of movies worth $32 billion, including three from its 2019 acquisition of Fox, according to the company.
