Mistral CEO: We have proven that Europe can build successful artificial intelligence technology

The head of one of Europe’s hottest artificial intelligence startups says he expects artificial intelligence technology to surpass large language models this year.

Arthur Mensch, CEO of French artificial intelligence company Mistral, told CNBC that he believes that the focus of artificial intelligence products in 2025 will broadly shift from models to “systems” that integrate models and contextual business data.

“I think the focus should shift to the system,” Mensch told CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal in an interview on Tuesday. “The model is part of the system, but the system is connected to the data, connected to the tools, able to actually do things on your behalf, able to act in an agentic way.”

Founded just two years ago, Mistral has quickly become one of the most talked-about artificial intelligence companies in Europe. Achieved a $6 billion valuation and support from U.S. tech giants Microsoft last year. The startup is considered a competitor to OpenAI and is the developer of several open source large-scale language models.

Mensch believes that future artificial intelligence systems will benefit from large language models integrated into them. He said that by connecting models with relevant contextual data, they will be better able to provide tailored solutions for different business needs.

“That’s where things are changing,” Mensch said. “It also means that industries adopting AI will bring their expertise into these systems – which is what is needed to truly drive the value of AI into these industries.”
