“CONVERGE” is CNBC’s new platform that explores growth opportunities at the intersection of investment, innovation, sustainable development and leadership with the help of the world’s most influential leaders.
First, CNBC spoke with five people who are using their influence to drive change.
- To invest in the next generation of leaders, music legend Nile Rodgers and business tycoon Sir Richard Branson recently announced a partnership between their respective philanthropic organizations. “We believe the world’s youth are the leaders of tomorrow,” Rogers told CNBC.
- Artificial intelligence is laying the foundation for innovation in all industries. But along with the excitement, there are concerns. “You have to understand that we are building machines with most of the cognitive capabilities of humans, and intelligence gives power. So, who will control this power?” Yoshua Bengio, known as one of the “Godfathers of Artificial Intelligence,” asked.
- Fashion designer Stella McCartney has been a pioneer in sustainability in fashion since the late 1990s. Still, the businesswoman said she was disappointed with the lack of progress in the industry. “We won’t see a real difference until people can do business this way, too,” McCartney said.
- Sir Bob Geldof rose to fame in the late 1970s with his band the Boomtown Rats, but he was also known for his activism. When it comes to the importance of leadership, Geldof told CNBC, “Leadership is the ability to formulate coherent policy and execute it, for better or worse.”
