These chilling words echo the title of a book published in 2010: “Delayed Denial Defense” It’s subtitled “Why Insurance Companies Won’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.”

Thompson Corporation is UnitedHealth Groupis the largest private health insurance payer in the United States and has been controversial for its relatively high medical claims denial rate.

Thompson, 50, was shot to death early Wednesday morning outside the downtown Hilton Hotel by a masked gunman wielding a silenced pistol. The gunman remains at large after escaping on his bicycle into nearby Central Park.

Thompson, a married father of two sons, was walking into a hotel on West 54th Street near Sixth Avenue for an investor meeting with UnitedHealth Insurance Company when he was shot.

Three spent shell casings and three live ammunition were found at the scene.
