Xreal on Wednesday launched its latest generation of augmented reality (AR) glasses to fend off threats like Yuan and break.
The company is backed by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibabahoping to capitalize on growing interest in AR glasses.
The X1 chip equipped in the Xreal One series is the company’s first self-designed glasses processor, marking a big step forward in product performance.
Xreal says people wearing its glasses will be able to connect to devices such as mobile phones, laptops or game consoles and view content on a huge digital screen in front of them. this Previous generation Xreal products A companion device called a Beam is required to connect to the device, but the latest chips mean that a Beam is not required.
Xreal CEO Xu Chi said in an interview with CNBC: “I think this is the biggest upgrade in the history of Xreal, and it may also be the biggest upgrade in the entire consumer AR glasses (industry).”
Xu said the X1 chip has been in development for three years, adding that he sees it as a way to enhance the capabilities of the glasses to stand out from the competition.
“We have to step up and define a chip that really defines some of the new features of these glasses,” Xu said.
Xreal is one of the largest players in the AR glasses space, but it faces stiff competition from: Snap launches a new set of glasses in Septemberas well as the continued efforts of Facebook parent company Meta Yuan Ray-Ban products. at the same time, CNBC reports This year’s one Qualcomm A set of glasses is being developed in partnership with Google and Samsung.
Xreal is one of the companies betting that glasses, rather than larger headsets like Apple’s Vision Pro or Meta Quest, will be the mass-market winner in AR.
“People have started to realize that headphones don’t make sense and we need a lighter form factor in the eyewear category,” Xu said. “But the challenge with glasses is, can we push the envelope and deliver a headphone experience in a smaller form factor?”
Xreal One and Xreal One Pro start at $499 and $599 respectively.
AR, which refers to a technology that overlays digital content onto the real world, has been heavily promoted over the past few years. However, the market did not explode as many predicted. Large headphones have proven too expensive or uncomfortable, and companies including Xreal and Meta are focusing on making the glasses experience more engaging.
The product also lacks content and killer use cases, something Xu said needs to change before the product category reaches a wider user base. The CEO added that it starts with good hardware.
“We need a platform, we need an ecosystem to improve the experience because we don’t have any content yet. But in order to get developers excited… you first need to have good hardware,” Xu told CNBC.
Xu said the company expects sales of previous products to reach 500,000 units by 2025, about double this year’s sales.
