A road bridge collapsed in northwest China’s Shaanxi province on Friday, killing 11 people, state media reported on Saturday, and President Xi Jinping urged an all-out rescue effort.

The incident occurred at 8:40 pm (1240 GMT) on Friday when a road bridge collapsed due to flash floods in Shangluo City, causing some vehicles to fall into the river.

As of 10 a.m. on Saturday, five vehicles were confirmed to have fallen into the water and 30 people were missing, state media said.

Xi Jinping pointed out that currently, our country is in a critical period of flood control, and all localities must take full responsibility and strengthen monitoring and early warning.

China’s National Fire and Rescue Department said on Saturday it had dispatched a rescue team to the scene, including 859 people, 90 vehicles, 20 boats and 41 drones.
